News Article Santa Cruz in Tenerife welcomes UK ship
Thursday 18th Jun 2009 at 17:57
Brits on Tenerife holidays welcomed a piece of home to the island this week when HMS Gloucester docked in the port of Santa Cruz.

Iain Lower, the commanding officer of the ship, was greeted onto the island by Cabildo president Ricardo Melchior, according to canaryislandnews.com.

The destroyer - which weighs 4,657 tonnes and is 141 metres long - had left Portsmouth on June 11th after being sent to carry out search and rescue missions, humanitarian work and anti-drugs operations in the south Atlantic ocean.

It will eventually reach the Falklands following its stop-off in Tenerife.

As well as the port, Santa Cruz - which is the capital of the island - offers a range of attractions for sun-seekers embarking on holidays in Tenerife.

It features Las Teresitas beach, as well as Teide national park and the World Heritage city of San Cristobal de La Laguna, which has many examples of beautiful modernist architecture.
