People who choose to take a holiday to Tenerife may notice the destination has recently undergone a facelift.

Island officials and local firms have joined forces to give many of its resorts a clean-up, the Tenerife News relayed.

Playa de la Arena, Los Gigantes, Las Bajas, Isla Cangrejo and Playa de Puerto de Santiago were among the areas focused on by the team.

The works involved collecting refuse from the sea and beaches while increasing awareness among about the importance of looking after the local environment.

As a result of the scheme, a number of rescued turtles were released back into the sea, according the report.

Staff affiliated to the Association of Businessmen and Commercial Companies and a local fireman community association joined forces with volunteers to instigate the facelift.
